“ I do my best to always make time for the kids.  Middle school is where I truly discovered my artistic talents.  This is where it all really started for me as a young artist & hopefully, my encouragement may have a positive affect in getting the kids fired-up about following their hearts & talents.  Using themes from my favorite movie– the Pixar movie “Cars”,  we talked about helping others, the importance of having true friends, and learning from good role models.  It was also really cool to talk about old Jeeps & Chevys since I am a big kid anyway.”—M. Solovey

Art Show

The Plains Art Show circa 1984
The Plains, Virginia
5th Grade

This was an article in the local paper covering an art show in which I entered my first piece of framed artwork.  As a middle school student, I drew a pencil drawing of an old sailing ship.  My mother had it framed & to my surprise it won “Popular Vote.”  Rumor has it my little sister voted a few more times than anyone else.

"About 300 attend art show"

Dover Elementary School

Our 4th grade class (Room 2) submitted material for the local paper  in October 1983 and my teacher, Mrs. Joyce Smith, asked me to draw the all the State icons (probably because I couldn’t spell as well as the other students).

Edison Buff

Dover, Pennsylvania Newspaper 1983
Dover Elementary School

My very first article featuring my independent study about Thomas A. Edison where I built (with the help of my father) a handmade lightbulb circuit switch display that actually worked.  Edison’s right-hand business associate, George Stringfellow was still alive and I was able to visit him in Washington, DC and interview him We discussed my ground-breaking electrical experiment.
